Julio Iglesias
Known for his smooth, silky voice, singer Julio Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain, on September 23, 1943. As a young man, Iglesias divided his time between studying law and playing professional soccer, but a car accident left him unable to walk for two years, forcing him to cut his soccer career short. While in the hospital, a nurse gave him a guitar to keep him occupied, and it was then that he discovered his musical talent. At 18, Julio Iglesias entered a songwriting competition with “La vida sigue igual”, meaning “Life goes on the same”. He subsequently won the competition, and was signed to Discos Columbia, the Spanish division of Columbia Records. Julio Iglesias made an international name for himself, having recorded songs in many different languages. In the early 1970s, his albums included Soy in 1973, A Flor de Piel in 1974, and El Amor in 1975. Julio Iglesias later moved to Florida and signed with CBS International.
During his career, Julio Iglesias had the opportunity to record with artists such as Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and many more. He has sold released more than two dozen albums, many of them going Platinum or Diamond. In 2013, Iglesias received the award for First & Most Popular International Artist of All Time in China, which was presented by Sony Music China in Beijing. He was also inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame that year, and was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the Best-Selling Male Latin Artist. He is the father of internationally-known singer Enrique Iglesias.
