Tracy Chapman

Born March 30, 1964, Tracy Chapman is a Cleveland, Ohio, native whose career began thanks to the father of one of her friends. Chapman was already a skilled singer and writer, but it was not until she was introduced to the manager at Elektra Records that she was able to take her talents to the next level. The result of this fateful meeting was the 1988 album Tracy Chapman, which featured the single “Fast Car”, which went to #5 on the U.K. charts and #6 on the United States charts. Chapman also won three Grammy Awards for the album: Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performer, and Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Her sophomore album entitled Crossroads was released in 1989, and though it was not as widely received as her first endeavor, it still placed on the Billboard 200 chart. Her third album Matters of the Heart in 1992 was even less successful, and Chapman took a new approach to her career, as evidenced by her fourth album. New Beginning was released in 1995, and proved to be her foray back into major spotlight thanks to the song “Give Me One Reason”. She received a Grammy Award in 1997 for the single for Best Rock Song. All totaled, Chapman has sold more than 5 million albums worldwide, and has released over 6 studio albums in her career.
