Internationally acclaimed singer Tony Bennett was born Anthony Benedetto on August 3, 1926, in Queens, New York. After working a string of different jobs, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in late 1944, but he was discovered for his gifted singing voice and was encouraged to pursue a professional career in music. Working with the producer Mitch Miller of Columbia Records, he released the hit “Because of You”, which gained him immense popularity in 1951. He then released a version of the Hank Williams song “Cold, Cold Heart”. Tony Bennett was selected to record the song “Stranger in Paradise” to promote the Broadway music Kismet, which not only garnered him more fame, it also thrust the production into the spotlight. In 1957, he released the album The Beat of My Heart, followed by the collaborations Basie Swings, Bennett Sings in 1958 and In Person! in 1959.

The 1960s, however, would prove one of his more successful decades with the release of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in 1962 followed by a Platinum-selling album with the same name. Throughout his career, Tony Bennett would release more than 70 albums, mainly through Columbia Records, and a handful of these were certified either Platinum or Gold. He has also won 17 Grammy Awards, including the 1963 award for Best Solo Vocal Performance for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” as well as for Record of the Year for the corresponding album. In 2001, Tony Bennett was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his stunning career in the music industry.
