Thundercat was born October 19, 1984 in Los Angeles, California. He was born with the given name Stephen Bruner. He began his career as a bass player and was part of a band called No Curfew as a teenager. He later joined his brother in a band called Suicidal Tendencies. He is on three albums with Suicidal Tendencies: Year of the Cycos, No Mercy Fool!/The Suicidal Family, and 13.

The majority of his career has been spent collaborating with other singers and bands. He is on albums with such stars as: Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Mac Miller, Vic Mensa, Keziah Jones, Jhene Aiko, Bilal, Young Jazz Giants, Terrace Martin, Ty Dolla Sign, Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Flying Lotus, Kirk Knight, Taylor McFerrin, Erykah Badu, Kimbra, and Childish Gambino. He has three studio albums: The Golden Age of Apocalypse, Apocalypse, and Drunk.
