Rapper Smoke DZA was born Sean Pompey on February 8, 1984 in Harlem, New York City. He dropped out of high school to pursue a rap career and was discovered in 2002 by Jonny Shipes from Cinematic Music Group. He ghostwrote for several rappers and became half of the duo Smoke & Numbers. He decided to go solo in 2008. Smoke DZA stands for “Dream Zone Achieve.”

Beginning in 2008, he released several mixtapes. His first album was released in 2011 and was entitled, “Rolling Stoned.” It received the Doobie Award for Hip-Hop Album of the Year by “High Times Magazine” in 2011. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, and he signed with “High Times’” record label. His second album, “Rugby Thompson,” was released in June 2012 It reached number thirteen on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart. “Dream.Zone.Achieve,” his third album, was released in April 2014 and reached number five on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and number eighteen on the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart.
