Rick Astley

Rick Astley was born Richard Paul Astley on February 6, 1966 in a small coal-mining town called Newton-Le-Willows in Northern England. He had a love for music from an early age, singing in the local church choir as a young boy. During his teenage years, he began drumming and joined local soul band FBI. When the lead singer of FBI left the band Rick took over as lead vocalist, and after catching the attention of record producer Pete Waterman he soon began working at PWL Studios in London.

In 1987 his first single “Never Gonna Give You Up” rocketed straight to the #1 spot on the Billboard charts, where it remained for 5 weeks. It was Britain’s biggest-selling single of the year. His second single “Whenever You Need Somebody” reached #1 in seven countries. His debut album Whenever You Need Somebody was released in 1988. It made him the top selling artist in the UK and became one of the top ten albums in the US, even earning him a Grammy nomination for “Best New Artist”. After his second album Hold Me In Your Arms was released in 1989, he sought more artistic freedom and signed with RCA/BMG Worldwide. From 1989 to 2001, Astley released three more studio albums; all were met with moderate success.

In 2008 the internet sensation of “Rickrolling” made Astley yet again a household name and caused “Never Gonna Give You Up” to once more chart in the UK. That same year, Rick won “Best Act Ever” at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
