Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior is a Brazilian professional footballer born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 12, 1988. He is currently a left back for the Spanish club Real Madrid and the Brazil national team. At 9 years old he started playing futsal and by 13 he was playing for Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. He played on the youth team for Fluminense from 2002 to 2005 and on the senior team from 2005 to 2006. In 2007 he joined the Spanish football team Real Madrid and has played with them ever since. He has been named to the FIFPro World XI five times, the UEFA Team of the year three times, and La Liga Team of the Season in 2016. Marcelo started playing for Brazil on the under 17 national team in 2005. In 2007 he played for their under 20 national team and from 2008 to 2012 played on their under 23 national team. In 2006 he made his debut on the senior national team against Wales. He has played in the Olympics for Brazil in 2008 and 2012. In 2008 they won a bronze medal and in 2012 they won a silver medal. Marcelo competed with the national team in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
