David Michael Portner, AKA Avey Tare, was born on April 24, 1979 in Maryland. He was part of the group that established the pop band Animal Collective, who released their first album in 1999. The other members were classmates of his. Though they all worked together equally, Avey Tare was often referred to as the lead lyricist.

Avey Tare also worked with other artists such as Eric Copeland to come up with releases like Terrestrial Tones. His debut solo album came out in 2010 and was titled Down There. In 2013 he announced that he had created a new band called Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. Their first album made its debut in 2014. Overall, Avey Tare has released six albums since 2000 and he has also made a few appearances and worked on a few collaborations with other artists.
