Alt-J

Originally conceived in 2007, Alt-J is an indie/experimental rock group that is formed by Joe Newman, Thom Green, and Gus Unger-Hamilton. At their inception, they were a quartet and also had former bassist Gwil Sainsbury along with them. The four met while they were students at Leeds University, located in West Yorkshire, England, and bonded over their love of music and art. Upon graduating, the four began recorded and eventually released their debut album entitled An Awesome Wave in 2012. This came after their signing to Infectious Records late in 2011. In order to promote their debut album, the band made appearances at many of the summer’s biggest festivals in 2012, and also closed on a tour of the UK and Ireland. Due to the success of their album, Alt-J won the British Mercury Prize, which is awarded to the best albums in the UK and Ireland. It was also honored by BBC Radio 6 Music as the Album of the Year on 2012.

2013 and early 2014 saw their many appearances at various festivals, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Coachella. It was announced in early 2014 that their bassist Swainsbury had officially left the group, only a few months before they announced what would become their second album This is All Yours, released in the fall of 2014.
