Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Sony Colombia signed her when she was 13 and released Magia, her debut album, in 1991. Her follow-up Peligro was released in 1993.

In 1995, she returned with her third album Pies Descalzos which became a top hit in eight countries. It also became platinum in the U.S. She released Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998) which entered the Billboard’s Latin album in No. 1. The album also received the Best Latin Pop Album from the Grammy Awards.

Shakira released another album, Laundry Service, which was mostly in English. The track “Whenever, Wherever” and “Underneath Your Clothes” entered the Top 10.

During her career, she won three Grammys: Best Latin Pop Album for Shakira – MTV Unplugged in 1998, Best Latin Rock/ Alternative Album for Fijación Oral Vol. 1 in 2000, and Best Latin Pop Album for El Dorado in 2017.
