The Roots

Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1987, The Roots are known for their ne soul take on hip-hop. While in high school, founding members Ahmir Thompson, known as Questlove, and Tariq Trotter, known as Black Thought, got together and began performing under the name Radio Activity, which was changed to The Square Roots before they landed upon The Roots. They released their debut album Organix in 1993, and after signing with DGC/Geffen Records, they released the album Do You Want More?!!!??! in 1994. Their first Top 40 album, however, was the 1996 record Illadelph Halflife, lead by the Top 40 hit “What They Do”. They followed this success with their breakthrough Things Fall Apart in 1999, which was made popular largely due to the song “You Got Me”. The single won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
