Initially, Chow played small roles on television and gained little success. He took grueling acting classes in the early 1980’s, which landed him a part in 430 Space Shuttle. Chow appeared in Fight Back to School in 1991, which is still Hong Kong’s most lucrative film ever. He then started directing and he received awards for both Best Director and Best Actor at the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards. He directed and starred in Kung Fu Hustle in 2005, which won him numerous awards and led to more film offers in China, including the Asian-popular CJ7 film. He came out with The Mermaid in 2016, which ended up having the most profitable opening week in Chinese history. Due to all of his different television parts and films, he is on the list of the top-grossing Hollywood Directors.
