Coming from Iceland, Sigur Ros has been active since 1994. The name Sigur Ros was named after a sister of one the band members. In English, it means “Victory Rose.” The band was formed when all members were still teenagers. The three founding members are Jon Por Birgisson, Georg Holm, and Agust Evar Gunnarson. Their first recorded song was able to land them a deal with Bad Taste label.

Their debut LP “Hope” was released in 1997. By 1998, the album “Recycle Bin” was composed of remixes of their songs. By 1999, Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band and they recorded the album “Ágætis Byrjun” which means “Good Start.” After having numerous tours and achieving platinum sales, Gunnarson left and was replaced by Orri Pall DyRason. Their first album “Svefn-G-Englar” was the first to be distributed outside Iceland became NME’s Single of the Week in 1999.
