Sam Smith, born Samuel Frederick Smith on May 19th, 1992 in London, England is a British singer and songwriter that began performing at a young age.  He was a member of the Youth Musical Theatre UK and played in a number of jazz bands.  His musical influences consist of Adele, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.

Sam broke into the music industry in 2012 when he was featured on the song “Latch” by the duo Disclosure.  The song peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2013 he released his first single called “Lay Me Down” and was featured on the song “La La La” by the Naughty Boys. In the same year he released his EP called Nirvana. He signed a deal with Capitol Records and released his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, in 2014.  The album peaked at number 1 on the UK Album Charts and number 2 on the Billboard 200. The single “Stay With Me” off the album reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2017 Sam released his second studio album entitled The Thrill of It All. He has won 4 Grammy Awards and one Golden Globe Award to date for categories such as Best Original Song and Best New Artist.
