Q-Tip, born Jonathan William Davis, is widely regarded as both one of the greatest hip hop producers, and rappers of all time. As a founding member of legendary alternative hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip produced the majority of their first three albums, all of which are regarded as classics today. Released in the early 90s, the albums featured iconic singles such as “Can I Kick It,” “Scenario,” and “Electric Relaxation.” Their sound, which Q-Tip is largely responsible for, was heavy with jazz samples and often featured live instrumentation, bringing a lot of new sounds to the genre. For this, A Tribe Called Quest are hailed as pioneers, not only for the jazz rap scene that would emerge in their wake, but for every alternative hip hop group to follow. Since A Tribe Called Quest’s breakup in 1998, Q-Tip has remained active both through solo material, as well as producing for other artists on albums such as D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Nas’ Illmatic, and Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
