Mila J (Japollonia)

Singer/Songwriter and rapper Mila J was born Jamila Akiko Chilombo on November 18, 1983, in Los Angeles, California. In 1991, Mila J appeared in the music video for Prince’s song “Diamonds and Pearls”, and meanwhile, she was making a name for herself as a singer when she and her sister joined the R&B group Gyrl. They released a few successful singles, but by 2000, Mila J wanted to take a break from performing in a group and pursue her solo career.

In 2006, Mila J released a single from her debut album Split Personality. The track, entitled “Good Lookin Out”, hit #27 on the Billboard Radio Monitor’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, and the album even featured vocals from R&B singer Marques Houston. She briefly changed her name to Japollonia so as to put forth and edgier appearance, but ditched that persona shortly after and returned to Mila J. She released a single “Smoke, Drink, Break-Up” off her 2014 album M.I.L.A., which features vocals from B.o.B and Ty Dolla Sign. Mila J is also the sister of singer Jhené Aiko.
