Ledisi

Ledisi Anibade Young, who goes simply by her first name as a performer, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1978. Ledisi was raised in Oakland, California, and grew up with a heavy musical influence stemming from her parents. Her mother was a singer and her stepfather was a drummer. Ledisi is also the biological daughter of Larry Saunders, a soul singer from the 1970s. She became active in her high school’s choir, and got her own musical start as a young teenager. Though she formulated a local band with some of her friends in the 1990s, Ledisi became serious about her career when she released a debut album independently under LeSun Records, entitled Soulsinger: The Revival. This was the impetus she needed to begin touring with her band, whom she called Anibade after her middle name. She later released her second independent album in 2002, entitled Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue, which won at the California Music Awards in the category for Outstanding Jazz Album.

Ledisi continued on her path to release Lost & Found in 2007, many of whose singles ranked highly on the Billboard Hot R&B Charts and which earned her two Grammy Award nominations. She later debuted Turn Me Loose in 2009, and at this point, Ledisi had made almost a complete cross over from Jazz to R&B. In 2011, she released Pieces of Me, which shot to #8 on the Billboard 200 and sold tens of thousands of copies in its first week. After gaining the opportunity to perform at the 2012 VH1 Divas show, she released The Truth, featuring the immensely popular hit “I Blame You”.
