J. D. Souther

J. D. Souther is a singer and songwriter from Texas, best known for penning songs that have been performed by Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles. As a Texan, he was deeply influenced by Roy Orbison. Briefly in the 1970s he formed a duo with songwriter Glenn Frey, then formed the band Souther Hillman Furay Band with Chris Hillman (formerly of the band The Byrds) and Richie Furay (formerly of the band Buffalo Springfield).

Souther’s biggest hit songs were written for The Eagles, including “Best of My Love” (1974), “New Kid in Town” (1976), and “Heartache Tonight” (1979). Outside The Eagles, Souther was a frequent collaborator with Don Henley, and has also worked with artists including James Taylor, James Intveld, and Bob Seger. In his own career, he has released eight studio albums and four singles to date, with “You’re Only Lonely” (1979) reaching #1 on Billboard Adult Contemporary and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
