Singer-songwriter and musician Elle Varner was born Gabrielle Serene Varner on February 12, 1989 in Los Angeles, California, where she grew up visiting recording studios with her songwriter parents. Beginning at age six, she learned to play flute, piano and guitar. In 2008, Varner graduated from NYU’s Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, which accepts only 24 students per year. In October of 2009, she signed a record deal with MBK/J-RCA Records as well as a co-publishing agreement with Sony Music.

On January 23, 2012, Elle Varner released a mixtape titled Conversational Lush. This was followed by the release of her debut album, Perfectly Imperfect, on August 7, 2012. Her first single from the album, “Only Wanna Give It to You”, features rapper J. Cole, while her second single, “Refill”, earned her a Grammy nomination for best R&B song. The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200. The following month, Varner was credited for co-writing the song “Use Me” for R&B singer Miguel.
