Canaan Smith

Canaan Smith was born in Williamsburg, Virginia on August 24, 1982. From an early age, he watched his father perform in a band and was inspired to pursue a career in country music. He grew up listening to nearly every artist from George Strait to Rage Against the Machine, which contributes to his unique musical style.

Canaan moved to Nashville in 2001 to attend Belmont University while pursuing a career as a singer/songwriter. In 2009, he co-wrote the song “Runaway” by country band Love and Theft, which charted at #10 on Billboard’s list of Hot Country Songs and #65 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009. His hard work as a songwriter led first to a publishing deal with Disney Music and eventually a record deal with Mercury Nashville Records. His first single “We Got Us” was released in January 2012 and debuted at #53 on the country music charts. In February 2012 he began working on his first studio album, and his second single “Love You Like That” was released on July 21, 2014 to much critical acclaim. It reached #1 on the Country Airplay chart in July 2015.

Through Mercury Nashville Records, his debut album Bronco was released in June of 2015 and features his first mega-hit “Love You Like That” and the title track “Bronco,” which was written in memory of his older brother, who was killed in a car accident when Canaan was 11. Bronco peaked at #29 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the Top Country Albums chart.
